Spring Sledding At It's Best!

Spring sledding has never been better but rain, snow and warm temps will raise a little havoc with trails this week. The base is still hard packed however warm temps will break it up so conditions may not be perfect but all projects have been out early this week to smooth up surfaces. Most won’t be out again until the weather cools off.No reports of water problems yet but with these warm temps they will spring up so sledders are reminded to use caution. Although there isn’t a lot of traffic we are receiving reports of speed issues so please, practice safe sledding and keep speed under control. Also, marked trails are located where they are for a reason. Usually because the landowner has asked that the trail be there………….so please, let’s keep good landowner relations by staying on the marked trail.Looking around the Crown all major ITS trails were groomed early this week with no reported problem areas. Trails are starting to pick up some waves in some areas but overall conditions remain good.Low lying areas are beginning to pose some issues that will require sledders attention. There will be water holes opening up and a few washouts may be possible. With 2200 miles of trails it is impossible for projects to find all the problem areas so sledders are advised to use caution especially in low lying areas, and around rivers and streams and stick to marked routes on the lakes. On the culinary side you can tell the season is waning as there isn’t must going on but the Linneus Sno Sports will have a Maine Maple Sunday Pancake Breakfast at the clubhouse and the Washburn club will still have breakfast Saturday and Sunday.

Spring Sledding Is Here!

Spring sledding is here, everyone was out this week and trails are hard packed and in good shape. Freezing rain and a drop in temps will harden up trails and reduce lubrication however flurries should be sufficient to solve that problem. Sledders are reminded to keep a safe distance while traveling to increase visibility in snow dust. As the days get longer and a bit warmer spring freshets are beginning to run and rivers and stream water levels increase and begin reducing ice cover so sledders should use caution on all water bodies. Also, be prepared and expect water holes and diminishing trail widths in low lying areas due to rising water levels. Use caution.Lots of deer and moose appearing now so use caution particularly when night riding. On a side note the deer look pretty healthy.Around the Crown ITS 85 is good through to northern Penobscot County and thanks to Ashland’s neighbors Walker Siding, Portage, Aroostook River and Ox Bow for keeping that system open during a breakdown……great job.ITS 83 is in good shape from Madawaska to Millinocket.ITS 81 is running good except the two areas closed or rerouted near Grand Isle and Limestone .ITS 92 is open and in great shape to Escourt………..wonderful spring riding.ITS 88 was in great shape this week as well as ITS 86……..both routes have little traffic but great riding.Logging operations have popped up off 73 near the Sly Brook Clubhouse and off ITS 83 north of Washburn………use caution. One the social side Mars Hill has a hot dog roast Sunday from 11-2 off Rt. 78 at the Townsend Camp……..everyone is welcome.MSA Board of Directors Meeting Saturday, March 14 at the Fort Fairfield Clubhouse off the Strickland Rd. Check the MSA site for times.

All Back Up and Grooming!

All projects are reporting grooming this week. A few breakdowns but neighbor projects have pitched in to groom. Despite heavy rain last Friday, there do not appear to be many water problems anywhere in the system. A cold snap this week and snow Friday should help sustain what have been excellent conditions this season. Sledders are reminded to use caution …rivers and streams are running which unsuspectingly diminishes ice cover. Lakes are holding steady but all projects should pay particular attention to all water crossings now. There is logging now on Rt. 98B, it is marked but sledders should use caution and heed signs. Also have an active logging operation crossing ITS 83 north of Washburn so use caution in this area. Active logging also on Rt. 75 east of Squa Pan and 85 south of Ashland. Sledders are reminded that if they run into problems, to please contact the local club. On the social side the Caribou Club will host a hot dog roast Saturday beginning at 9:30 off Rt. 105 in Stockholm. Portage Lakers will hold a supper on the run/ poker run Saturday beginning at 6 p.m. and when you are done running you can dance a bit. And Sunday Sly Brook will host a breakfast at the clubhouse from 7 to noon for project grad.A reminder that snow Friday into Saturday will put grooming equipment on the trail over the weekend and due to soft snow conditions these big boys can’t hug to close to the edge of the trail so please use caution and ride right and give groomer operators room to move. And regular breakfasts Saturday at the Meduxneakeag Ramblers Clubhouse and Saturday and Sunday at the Washburn Clubhouse.

Starting To Warm...

Greetings from Aroostook County......... WARNING: The Can Am Crown will begin Saturday morning at 8 a.m. Mushers will be on ITS 92 and ITS 85 a few times Saturday then throughout the day Sunday into early Monday. Watch for paw print signs and please stop when asked by spotters and course officials. Remember a dog sled and team can reach 20-30 feet in length or even longer and dogs do not have headlampsBy Wednesday most projects had recovered from the last storm which left anywhere from 6 to 24 inches of new snow. The probable chance of rain and snow mix should not hurt conditions as this years snow fall has been pretty dry and should hold quite a bit of moisture. With ½ inch of water due in you will need to watch for water holes in low lying areas.Sledders should also be aware that despite snow, spring is on the way and longer days and warmer temps will begin meltdown which will effect waterbodies so caution should be used.We are receiving more and more reports of moose sitings so use caution especially when night riding. Please be advised that the Limestone system is being groomed this year and ITS 81 has simply been rerouted to 81A and has been marked.Remember also if you are heading to Escourt that you will need to gas up at Chamberlains and pay attention to signage. With warm temperatures sledders are reminded that some of the side trails provide great riding without high traffic that can tear up the main trails. Try the Sly Brook system between Cross Lake and Eagle Lake or the Chapman Walker Siding system around Squa Pan but watch out for logging on 75.Rt 71A from Ashland to Ox Bow takes you out in the country and ITS 86 between Ox Bow and Littleton gives you some great outdoor options. And don’t forget the Linneus Sno Sports sytem in southern Aroostook. And of course ITS 81 in the Grand Isle, Madawaska area provides some great views of the St. John Valley. On the culinary side Van Buren will host a breakfast Sunday at the Van Buren Community Center and of course the regular fare includes breakfast on Saturday at the Meduxneakeag Ramblers clubhouse and Saturday and Sunday at the Washburn Trail Runners clubhouse

Fresh Powder!

Greetings from Aroostook County......... Snow and wind on Thursday will hamper grooming operations but most projects will be out once the snow subsides. Sledders are reminded that it takes most projects 12-24 hours to get through their system once after a storm and that is just to knock it down and clean up road crossings………then it is out again for grooming……….but still riders will get fresh powder.ITS 85 Logging south of Ashland so use caution. You did hit plowed road on the Eagle Lake section last week but they are back on track now. And don’t forget Eagle Lake has rerouted 85 off the Red River Rd in Winterville……..it is marked but please stay on the marked trail ITS 83 Most of it was a bit choppy this weekend up north due to high traffic levels but overall by Saturday it should be in good shape. Think about some of the side trails for connections instead of the main drags………..the main drags will tend to get more traffic and breakdown quicker in warmer temps.ITS 81 Just a reminder there are a couple of changes this year. First 81 is closed between Rt 96 and Rt 98B due to logging. So there is a hole in that trail but coming south you can hit 98B to Long Lake and travel about three miles down the lake to Rt. 79. Just reverse the route traveling from the south. In the Limestone section, the border trail is not being groomed. Rt 81 A is the reroute for 81 here so follow those signs as it might not have ITS markers. Also Rt. 94 out of Van Buren off ITS 81 is now open and groomed but Rt. 89 off 94 is closed to the Rt. 100 intersection due to logging. The only access to Rt. 89 is from the Rt 100 intersection coming from Caswell.ITS 81 south is in good shape and there is less traffic in this area so the riding stays pretty consistent.ITS 92 will open to Escourt probably Saturday depending on snow fall. Please read the signs before you head out. Last gas is at Chamberlains store and customs is not open on the weekend. The Lincoln Trail or 92A/92B is open this year for those wishing to make a loop.ITS 120 is the Debouille Trail or the old 85D. There may be 85D markings and not ITS 120 signs so if you see 85D markers and the trail is groomed you probably are on the right trail………if the trail isn’t groomed……you are probably lost. It is in great shape this winter. ITS 90 should be ready by Friday night weather permitting from Portage to the Fort Fairfield connection. All projects have been out this week.ITS 88 This piece will be ready for the weekend. ITS 86 Big grooming op after snow but it should be ready by Saturday.ITS 105 will be ready for Saturday from north to south.ITS 114 will be ready for the weekend with limited traffic.ITS 110 was groomed this week and will be again by the weekend.

...AWESOME!

Overall:Awesome is all I can say about the trails here in The County……..if you haven’t been out you are missing some great riding………kudos to all the projects for doing a great job. It’s going to be a bit blustery and cold so when you head out……make sure you are prepared if you breakdown. Extra belt, extra plugs and don’t forget additive for the fuel….ethanol is raising havoc with small engines.Looking around The Crown…..ITS 92 open and groomed now from Fort Kent to Escourt. Remember the border crossing is not open weekends so plan accordingly.ITS 120 the Debouille Trail is now open and groomed…….great loop.ITS 85 open from Millinocket to Fort Kent with a couple of blips from logging but the trails are marked so please follow signage and let them do their work. One spot is just north of Portage and the other is just south of Ashland where you will ride on the Fenderson Rd for about 1 mile and they are asking to use the left side of the road………(you figure it out??)ITS 83 open and groomed from Madawaska to points way south……….the power line portion of the trail in Stockholm has been rerouted now runs on woods roads and new trail……….beautiful ride.ITS 81 still have that logging west of Mars Hill with plowed road but it is signed……..keep right.ITS 81 is closed north of Van Buren to the 98B intersection but 98B is open and groomed as well as 81 north. Watch for a reroute in Limestone. No problems getting to the Long Lake Country Club……..use 96B.ITS 86 from Ox Bow to Littleton groomed and waiting for ridersRt. 71A from Ox Bow to Ashland is now open with a river crossing…it’s marked…stay on the marked trail to be safe.ITS 90 now open from Portage to Fort Fairfield. Portage has the Carr Pond trail and the Buffalo Trail open and they are ready for their Radar Run Sunday, registration at 9 racing at 10.On the culinary side:Regular bills of fare………….Friday Night: Stew Nights at the Presque Isle Clubhouse from 5-7 p.m. Stew Nights at the Washburn Clubhouse from 5-8 p.m.Saturday AM Breakfast at the Meduxneakeag Ramblers Clubhouse 6 a.m. Breakfast at the Washburn Clubhouse 7 a.m.-noonSunday AM Breakfast at the Wasbhurn Clubhouse 7 a.m.-noonOne Time Meal DealsSaturday, January 24 HOT DOG ROAST, Axel Siding ( off Rt. 105) in Stockholm 10-2 Caribou Snowmobile ClubSTEAK SUPPER, Sly Brook Snowmobile Clubhouse 4-8 p.m.Sunday, January 25	BREAKFAST Pleasant Ridge Runners Clubhouse 7 a.m. -noon Events:RADAR RUNS Sunday, January 18	Portage Lake Reg. 9 Racing 10INTERNATIONAL SNOWMOBILE FESTIVAL FEB 6-8 www.isfim.netPasses can be purchased at the Caribou Parks & Rec. 55 Bennett Dr. CaribouHOULTON MOOSESTOMPERS FESTIVAL www.greaterhoulton.com5th ANNUAL ANDY SANTERRE RIDE FEB 7 www.amhc.org

Thank You!

First of all let’s thank the groomer operators who have put up with water holes, mud holes, and stuck groomers . Badly need snow will help…. but sledders should expect to see grooming equipment out Thursday through Saturday night so use caution. Also a note to sledders. If you get to a point where the trail isn’t groomed and there are no trail markings………well you probably shouldn’t be there. When the landowner says they will be logging……let’s let them log…….please don’t venture off onto woods roads that aren’t trails where there is active logging…………not good for you, not good for them and not good for the clubs and projects that work so hard on landowner relations………….thanks……now let’s see what is going on.ITS 92 is now open all the way to Allagash with active logging so use extreme caution. Allagash to Escourt might be open for the weekend. The good news is that ITS120, the Debouille Trail, should be open this weekend……but check locally before you head out into nowhere.ITS 85 is open and groomed from Fort Kent to Ox Bow with the exception of a small break north of Portage to the Eagle Lake turnaround but that should be remedied by the weekend. There is logging so use caution.ITS 83 has clear sailing from Houlton north to Madawaska. Nordic Lakers are attempting to reroute the power line into the woods and that may take effect this weekend…….watch for signage.ITS 81 has lots of logging. To date there is no reroute in the Grand Isle area so 81 is closed from the 96 intersection on the south end to the 96B intersection north of Grand Isle. The good news is that that Van Buren has the Rt. 79 reroute complete and there are trail corridor markings on Long Lake from the Country Club to Van Buren Cove…….and towards points west on the lake for those who wish to connect. Thanks to Fort Fairfield and Caswell, Limestone trails will be groomed this winter which means that ITS 81 will be open but with a slight reroute. Give them this weekend to work out the grooming, signage and change. From Fort Fairfield south to Mars Hill you’ll be ok but heading west from Mars Hill expect to hit two logging ops with plowed road….please stay right and follow signage. In Squa Pan there is logging again on Rt. 75 however groomers are trying to make a trail along the woods road. Please keep right and follow signs.ITS 86 between Littleton and Ox Bow has been open and should be groomed for the weekend. More snow will smooth out 86 towards the border. On the culinary side:Friday Night:	Stew Nights at the Presque Isle Clubhouse from 5-7 p.m. (ps. Howard told be had was making lasagna this week!)\ Stew Nights at the Washburn Clubhouse from 5-8 p.m.Saturday AM	Breakfast at the Meduxneakeag Ramblers Clubhouse 6 a.m. Breakfast at the Washburn Clubhouse beginning at 7 a.m.Sunday AM Breakfast at the Wasbhurn Clubhouse beginning at 7 a.m. Special breakfast this Sunday at the Fort Fairfield Clubhouse off ITS 81 or by car off the Strickland Rd.Mon.
Still less then excellent, but rideable!

Overall:Most sledders will find it is still early in the season and last weekends thaw stopped most grooming in its tracks. Trails are hard packed and could use snow at this point. There is still lots of water so sledders should use extreme caution. Looking around the Crown ITS 85 has been opened with the exception of a section between Ashland and Portage which still has logging and the section from Portage north to the Eagle Lake which should be open by the weekend…..traveling now you will share a roadway with logging trucks…KEEP RIGHT AND SLOW DOWN>ITS 92 is not open between St. Francis and Allagash due to logging. Looking to connect on the ITS 120 the Debouille Trail to get into Allagash and on to Escourt which has not been groomed at this time.ITS 83 has been open from Madawaska to Houlton and points south however like all trails there are water holes and limited snow once groomers have been out.ITS 81 is closed between Grand Isle and Van Buren so sledders will have to find alternate routes. ITS 81 has not been open in Limestone so there is no connection south on 81 till south of Fort Fairfield. Heading west on 81 from Mars Hill has been open.At this point Rt. 79 from Rt 105 to Long Lake has been rerouted and is open however caution is advised. ITS 86 between Houlton and Ox Bow has been open. ITS 85 south of Ox Bow is fragmented so sledders should check local conditions. Millinocket area trails for the most part are groomed. With conditions less than excellent, sledders are advised to reduce speed, keep right and stay on marked trails.

It's coming Together!

Overall:Well the three months of poor sledding are just about at an end as projects work to reroute, fill water holes and groom trails. For those wanting to head out over the Christmas holiday let’s take a look at conditions around the Crown.ITS 83 will be open for the most part from Houlton north to Presque Isle, Presque Isle will probably be out by the weekend. From Washburn, 83 is groomed to Stockholm where there is a break due to development of a reroute. From Cross Lake north to Madawaska there will be clear sailing on 83 with grooming and trail markings looking to be up for the weekend.ITS 85 is a bit more problematic. Eagle Lake and Fort Kent have 85 groomed however there is logging going on the Portage end so until that is worked out……….no grooming on that end nor further south ITS 81 will be spotty with no grooming in Ft Fairfield as they wait for their new groomer, no grooming in Limestone however Caswell and Van Buren will be out but 81 is closed currently between Van Buren and Grand Isle with no proposed reroute at this time. Further north Frenchville and Madawaska are grooming.ITS 90 is open from Portage to Rt. 105 and will probably open to Caribou by the first of the week.Sledders Rt 79 from 105 to Van Buren Cove is closed due to logging. A reroute is being worked on but stay out of the area for now.ITS 92 has had some grooming on the St. Francis end but logging is going on towards Allagash but should be cleaned up in a couple of weeks. The trail to Escourt is still closed due to logging and plowed roads. The snow blanket on lakes and rivers will slow down ice build up so sledders should stay clear of water crossings. As with last week we need some patience as we work to pull together 2200 miles of trails………..not an easy task when it is managed by all volunteers and depends on 99% private landowners who are having a bit of a tough time right now.

First Official 08-09 Report!

Overall:Well that 3 months of bad sledding is winding down and the 9 months of good sledding is almost here but let’s talk about some issues first. It is early in the season……..and yes there is snow however, there is also water which makes grooming problematic. Yes Madawaska and Frenchville have been out but there are no trail markings except for stop signs and no connections are yet to be made. Can a sledder beat around………..yes but, there have been reroutes and with crust and fluff underneath it is still tough going………..like spring sledding…….not for the feint of heart.Sunday into Monday looks like the first major storm of the season which will allow us to probably begin grooming however the early snow will prevent the ground from freezing once again this winter so sledders should expect water in low lying areas. This also brings us to the lake conditions. Square Lake is setting up with reports of nearly 8 inches of ice however, high water levels and running water create higher temperatures in the lake water which limits ice build up so although the lakes might look safe, fact is…….they aren’t……..so stay off………if you are a no fear sledder……..well do you know where all the inlets are because we guarantee the ice isn’t going to be very thick here…..but of course that’s up to you….. but swimming this time of year isn’t a very pleasant experience. The other issue is the down swing in the soft wood market has created some problems for the forest sector economy. Right now there are major hold ups with trails and there are some major reroutes:
